about

Around 2017-2018, I intended to release a Joe Satriani or Andy Timmons-style electric guitar album. During that time, I also enrolled in grad school (philosophy major) and split my time on the songs and production of the Hours Quiet debut album. In addition, I was still working on an acoustic guitar album, the kind that most people were accustomed to hearing from me in the previous two releases. Since we only have 24 hours in a day, and I was intent on graduating, I had to pick my battles. Ultimately, I recorded about five or six songs in this genre but returned to my ongoing projects.

For me, the highlight of this recording was getting my daughter to play rhythm guitar on Alive. She was 14 at the time and was getting really good, so on a whim, I asked her to play rhythm. Sometime between getting home from school and dinner time, I told her what chords to play and handed her my Stratocaster. Recording her performance took only a few minutes, but the memory will always stay with me. Listening to Alive brings me back to that moment and still brings a smile to my face.

Can an instrumental track convey a theme or sentiment? I believe it can. However, one could argue that with the absence of lyrics, it is an entirely subjective experience and not easily verifiable. Therefore, I can tell you what the song means to me. For me, Alive is about having the freedom to pursue the things that capture our interests, the things in life that make us feel 'Alive'. My approach: If you want to have an interesting life, follow your interests. If you want to feel alive, do the things that make you come alive. It's that simple but also that difficult given the mundane world in which we live.

Also, I should mention that one thing I enjoy doing is revising the production values and performances of past releases. So there could be a situation in which I replace one of these songs with an improved or remastered version. It's one of the freedoms I enjoy as an independent artist. It feels like complete freedom when I can revise my music like this. Consider this a "living document" that will be revisited from time to time with new versions and updated technology. As long as I'm alive, the music will be, too.

Enjoy!

Readers of the San Antonio Current voted Adam Zuniga "Best Instrumental Band" (runner-up), two years in a row during their annual Best of San Antonio Music issues (2013, 2014). NY-based music blog, Noise Beneath the Apple, wrote, “Either Adam Zuniga is not a traditional world artist, or he is changing the very face of the genre upside down. Either way, it is a victory.” ... more
